Spatial Dysplasia

Spatial Dysplasia

The inspiration from this show is ultimately derived from the medical term ‘proprioception’ that some identify as the sixth or seventh human sense. It is the ability of the body to locate itself in space. Its antonyms are dislocatability and displacement, and its medical analog dysplasia, alluding to a misalignment or dysfunction, metaphors for the current crises of migration over borders fueled by racism and divisiveness and the degradation of memory in neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's. As individual works of art, they locate themselves in space in relation to the viewer, relating as empty signifiers: celebrated presences or vacated embodiments.
